So this is what I've been working on recently
@Moon A new multi-booting thing for modern Android (i.e. devices after Android 10 / 11) with a bunch of useful hacks like booting arbitrary system images in debuggable mode and probably root access (haven't implemented this yet).
@Moon The other author (phhusson, the maintainer of the largest custom generic system image build) also had the idea to integrate a generic recovery image into this, so that porting custom recovery like TWRP to new devices is no longer needed. We can also probably just pull in Magisk and there will be no need to flash boot images for it anymore (with the added benefit of being able to turn it on and off dynamically).
